Across the UK, thousands of seriously ill children will spend time in hospital, feeling anxious, scared and lonely. Play is the one thing that can help all of these children – and yet so many hospitals don’t have the money to make play happen.
Darshil's Collection
If you were to meet Darshil, what you’d see is a super-friendly, cheerful little eight-year-old. You’d have absolutely no idea what he’s been through.
Darshil has endured the fear, pain and trauma that comes with being diagnosed at the age of 3 with leukaemia during Covid. It was a terrible time for the whole family but his mum Kalpana, is so grateful for the amazing treatment he has received at his hospitals and is especially grateful for Darshil's play team:
"The play team were vital! They were someone else he could talk to and play with and they gave him a chance to be a kid again while taking away his anxiety through all the tests and treatments and they worked hard to help him calm down before procedures and make things easier."
Darshil currently loves Lego, going to the library and he's a maths whizz!

Kitty's Collection
“Over her seven years of treatment, every time Kitty went into hospital, I saw another layer of her confidence stripped away. Support from people like Starlight helped us keep everything together.
Thanks to the play resources they provide, I was able to reconnect with my daughter through play. Whether it was colouring-in or fuzzy felt, storytelling or jigsaws, playing helped to ease Kitty’s anxiety and made the dark thoughts disappear."
- Debbi, Kitty's mum
Lucy's Collection
“I like colouring-in because it helps me with my anxiety and I have anxiety because I’m in hospital a lot. Lilac is my favourite colour because it helps me feel calm and I need that because going into hospital makes me feel sad and worried.
I know I have to go into hospital because it’s for the best. Our play specialists in hospital are so nice and the doctors and nurses too, but when you are in hospital for a long time IT’S BORING! That’s why having toys and games is good. It distracts me from what’s happening."
